OpenAdapter Robin Model: Private, Half-Price, Now Live
OpenAdapter just released OA-Robin-Mini-Preview — their first self-built, self-hosted model. It's private by default, has 256K context with vision and tool calling, and costs half the usual rate. Here's the rundown.
What Is OA-Robin-Mini-Preview?
Robin is OpenAdapter's first own model — built and hosted on their own hardware. That's the key difference: unlike the other 65+ models on OpenAdapter (which are proxied from various providers), Robin runs entirely on OpenAdapter's infrastructure.
What that means in practice:
- Private by default. Your prompts never leave OpenAdapter's infrastructure. Nothing is retained. This is the same privacy guarantee as their other Edge models.
- 256K context window with vision, tool calling, and JSON mode — so it slots straight into agents and long-running workflows.
- 0.5× cost multiplier. Every Robin request costs half a normal request, so you get roughly double the usage from the same plan.
- It's a preview. Expect it to keep improving. OpenAdapter says a much larger model in the same family is coming soon.

Why This Matters
Most "AI coding platforms" are just resellers — they proxy requests to Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, etc. You're trusting multiple third parties with your code and prompts.
OpenAdapter's Edge models (including Robin) run on their own GPUs. Your data stays in one place. For confidential work — internal APIs, proprietary algorithms, customer data — that's a meaningful difference.
The 0.5× multiplier is also significant. On the entry-level Go plan at $7/mo, Robin requests effectively cost half as much, stretching your budget further for high-volume coding tasks.

How to Try Robin
Two ways:
- Go to the Models page on OpenAdapter and select
OA-Robin-Mini-Preview. - Point your client directly at
OA-Robin-Mini-Previewvia the OpenAdapter gateway (same API format as other models).
No separate subscription, no new API key — it's included in existing OpenAdapter plans.
Bottom Line
Robin isn't a "GPT-5 killer" or a benchmark-chasing flagship. It's a practical, private, cost-efficient model for everyday coding work — chat, brainstorming, agent workflows — where you'd rather not send your data to a third party. As a preview, it'll get better; a larger sibling is already in the works.
If you're already on OpenAdapter, switch a few tasks to Robin and see how it feels. If you're not, the privacy-first architecture and 0.5× pricing make the platform worth a look — starting at just $7/mo.
